O'Neil tried out for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while in high school. The contestant was able to climb into the top 100 courtesy of the enthusiasm shown by judges for her performance. O'Neil had received high praise from jury. But she was a victim of massive losses during the top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. She was placed in the bottom three, followed by the second place. Judges were horrified by this and proclaimed to the public they believed that Melissa was the top contestant. O'Neil, who had been always delivering top performance since then, never fell below the three top performers. She was the judge. Werner predicted, after another two incredible performances, that O'Neil would be the winner in her Canadian Idol competition, as she would be the first woman and the youngest contestant in history after the 7th September, 2005 finals. O'Neil was immediately contacted from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
